A Perfect Southern Style Country Wedding: The Essentials

The country-themed wedding is by far one of the most novel-wedding aesthetics. It’s down-to-earth, its simplicity is elegant and it is usually held in the great outdoors; what is there not to like! An outdoor country wedding is the perfect summer setting for a blooming romance. Open woodland spaces and rustic barnyards can host an entire evening of drinking and dancing as the lovebirds usher in the latest chapter in their lives cloaked by warm summer evening air.

To be sure that your country wedding goes off without a hitch, here are a few of the most important considerations that you should take when planning the wedding. This is merely a suggested framework for your event, and you should expound, improvise and elaborate as much as you can until it fits your taste perfectly.

Location

The most important consideration for any wedding is going to be the location of both the service and the reception. Some people have to reserve a venue for their nuptials almost a year in advance, which sometimes postpones a wedding for longer than many couples would like. Being the country boy and girl however, you know that resourcefulness is one of your greatest qualities. You don’t need to exchange your vows in a swanky venue. Your wedding is validated by the love of your family, friends and spouse-to-be. You want your wedding to simultaneously illustrate your lofty affections and your down-to-earth roots.

Barn wedding ceremony

An outdoor location for one or both of your wedding events is going to be a high priority. This means that weather considerations are very important, since you don’t want your guests shivering in their seats and cursing your ill-advised winter wonderland wedding. Once you’ve decided on a date, you need to find an area that can host your estimated party attendance and give them room to roam about while enjoying the conversation and delicacies that will be had at your reception.

Barns are the ultimate symbolism for a country lifestyle, so if you can find a preserved one ready for such an occasion as a wedding, it will really boost the overall effectiveness of your country theme. For a daytime service in particular, slivers of sunlight peeking through the old barnyard walls and falling on the wedding couple can be romantic and, quite frankly, exciting for all of your guests to see. The bottom line is that your location is going to function as the canvas for your dream country wedding, so make sure that it will be something that will look good when accented with country-style decoration.

Attire

If you’ve been thinking about having a country wedding, chances are that you’ve already thought about walking down the aisle in your favorite pair of boots. This is a wonderful idea since boots are obligatory country footwear. Cowboy boots are the most iconic element of western culture heritage and they can’t be neglected if you are taking a comprehensive approach to country-style nuptials.

Although the bride will most likely still be wearing white, she doesn’t have to adhere to tradition when it comes to her footwear. In fact, a straightforward pair of neutral Justin Boots may be the best way to bridge the gap between a white wedding gown and an earthy rustic wonderland. Bridesmaids can follow suit, or they can wear a brown slouch variation to complement their colorful bridesmaids’ dresses.

You should also decide whether or not you would enforce a dress code. An entire wedding party that participates in your down-south festivities can only enhance what will already be a pretty fabulous event. Let everyone know in the invitations if western-oriented styles of dress are “suggested” or “encouraged.”

Seating

Fortunately for you, a cowboy country wedding theme doesn’t require that you have consistency in terms of furniture. Instead, the outdoor country wedding should be reminiscent of the days when a rural community would come together and the growing crowd of locals would have to improvise seating when they needed a rest from the activity. You’re obviously excited to spend your reception dancing the night away with all of your loved ones, but the older invitees will want you to have ample seating at your event.

One of the most ingenious ideas for seating that has been used is covering hay bales with burlap or lightly colored sheets secured by twine or thin rope. Hay bales are essentially building blocks that can be stacked and scattered in any way that you think would look best or be most convenient. They offer that quintessential country touch while still providing you with flexibility. A single bale can seat multiple guests like a farmhouse love seat, and they can be scattered throughout the reception space for easy access to everyone in attendance.

At the dinner tables wooden seating is a must, so don’t worry about deploying an army of folding aluminum chairs to accommodate everyone. A hodgepodge of mismatched wooden seating, maybe even a bench or two gives your dining setting a lot of character, while adding to the underlying casualness of the event. It can also make your seating arrangement pop against the background, and can reflect the diversity of the newly-combined families coming together in celebration of a single event.

Abundant seating should be an important consideration, so any surface that is relatively comfortable and thematically consistent can be used to help your guests take a load off. In fact, if you can somehow acquire a rusty old pickup, just pop down the tailgate to open up seating for about half a dozen of your guests: it will create conversation and be a prime picture location for the entire evening.

Décor

The part of your country wedding that will really distinguish you from others is going to be how you decorate the landscape. If you wanted, you could go with the ‘southern social elite’ vibe, but the creative, more accessible ‘rustic romance’ approach will be much more interesting to your invitees and less alienating to your casual guests.

The rustic aesthetic is really a beautiful juxtaposition between the antiquated southern lifestyle and modern-day country living. Your decoration will need to reflect the resourcefulness of the simple country folk, but be highlighted by the traditional trimmings of a romantic wedding. On paper this might sound odd, but anything that rusts or rots could make for some very rich thematic decoration for your wedding background. Think of how great the scenery would look with the occasional cartwheel leaning against a hay bale or a wheelbarrow used as a cooler.

Table centerpieces are a great opportunity to really seize the country theme and make for an almost anachronistic dining experience. Old milk or cream cans can be used to contain a daisy arrangement at the center of each guest table. Smaller hors d’oeuvres stations around the area’s perimeter might be made of upright wine barrels with a single baby’s breath bouquet sitting in a polished aluminum soup can. Nametags or table assignments can be hanging from horseshoes or etched on circular wood slabs. The country wedding is all about taking easy-to-access items and refurbishing them for a simply elegant wedding event.

One other suggestion would be to buy a ton of mason jars. Mason jars are the most versatile country wedding accessory, as they can be used for fancy drinks, floral arrangements, they can hold candles, or be used as gift containers. You can even hang them from a barn ceiling as decoration. When it comes to country weddings, you can never have too many mason jars.

Themed weddings are becoming increasingly prominent in our culture, and reasonably so. Couples are not willing to spend their big day (and their money) going through the motions the way that their parents, and their grandparents probably did in the past. People today want their wedding day to be expressions of the unique personalities that are being united in marriage, and they want their guests to have a genuine impression of who they really are. Themed weddings allow couples to impart a statement about their romantic story on the people whom they share their big day with.

The key to a southern-themed wedding is to relax. After months (and maybe years) of planning, this is going to be the evening where everyone unwinds and enjoys the company of an enthusiastic couple taking their first steps on a lifelong journey together. Whether they’re on hay bales or rocking chairs, your guests will share in your excitement as they marvel at the wonderful wedding that they are now a part of. Use these suggestions to help you create the perfect country styled wedding.

Finding the Right Wedding Hairpiece

The dress has been hunted down, the shoes snapped up and your makeup decided on. The next big decision a blushing bride is what to do with her hair. Whether you’re wearing your hair up or down, it’s your wedding hairpiece which will pull everything together and make you feel like a bride.

Headpiece tips

There are some general things to keep in mind before you start looking for your dream headpiece:

Know how you’re going to wear your hair and have a dress picked out first. The accessory should work with your overall look, especially your veil if you’re wearing one.

Think about angles. You’ll be seen from the side and the back, so check how your headpiece looks from all angles and how your photographs will look.

Try it on well before the wedding to make sure it’s comfortable and won’t distract you from more important things.

Match your headpiece to your jewellery so they’re not fighting for attention

How to pick the right headpiece

If you’re having a country wedding

If your wedding is set outdoors and you’re going for a relaxed vibe, you might want to eschew the crystals and diamonds in favour of flowers, nonchalantly placed in your hair.

You could try wild flowers, or choose from specially designed wedding hair flowers to achieve the same look without the worry of the flowers wilting. The slightly undone braid looks fantastic with flowers put through it. Some brides would gasp in horror at something so informal but it can look enchantingly pretty in the right setting.

If your wedding is vintage themed

The vintage chic themed wedding has been going strong for a while now as brides look to capture the romance and glamour of a bygone era. Ornate hair clips in a leaf, flower or feather design will definitely give you the vintage feel you are looking for.

If you’re going for a 20s look

A forehead piece will make a dramatic impact, while an art deco headpiece fastened to the side of an updo will help you achieve the look in a more understated way. Feathers and bird cage veils will be what you are after for a sophisticated 20s style image.

If you want to be a princess bride

If you grew up on a diet of Disney films and have always dreamed of being a princess if only for one day, a show-stopping tiara is a must. It’s the ultimate princess look and make you feel like you’re really having that fairytale wedding you so deserve.

If you want a classic look

A pretty hair comb is ultra-chic and perfect for a demi-chignon or a loose bun worn low. It’s easy to fasten it yourself, just be sure to insert it so it sits close against your head and is properly secured.

If your dress is simple

If your dress isn’t overly embellished, you can afford to add some glamor and shimmer with your hair accessories. However, something overly extravagant would feel incongruent with a simple dress, so try wearing a few artfully placed slides. Choose from pearl (great with lace dresses) or a glitzy crystal slide for a bit of glamour.

If you’ve got short hair

A short crop doesn’t have to stop you from feeling ultra-feminine and sexy. Adding a headpiece studded with ladylike pearls or even a tiara will draw attention to your face and make you feel ready to walk down that aisle.

If you have a voluminous  gown

The size of your headpiece should correlate with the scale and design of your dress. An extravagant hair accessory will just distract from a highly embellished, princess or A-Line style dress with a long train. Try a simple headband or slide. Remember that a hairpiece is only an accessory and should complement the dress, not overpower it.

A Wedding Photography Experience Makes For A Lesson Learned!

When my wife and I were planning our wedding back in 2009, our strict budget meant we would only be splurging on one or two things. We decided to rank the services based on what we thought were most important. In the end, our biggest ‘splurge’ item was the wedding photographer we hired to take our engagement photos and shoot our wedding. After hearing time and again how it all goes by so quickly, we wanted to ensure that we captured every moment and have a whole set of beautiful, timeless images from both the ceremony and the party afterwards to look back on and enjoy for years to come.

We were thrilled with our engagement photos but wary when the photographer informed us that he was unavailable for our actual wedding date and would send his brother and partner instead.

We weighed our options and ultimately accepted the substitute, only to regret it when the pictures came back a couple of months later. Every complaint we could have had was represented in the photos we received. The photos had odd angles, cut off bodies and there were even moments that had been completely missed. We complained of course, but what recourse did we have? When it comes to wedding days, there are no do-overs.

wedding photography

The lesson learned here has to be: when it comes to your wedding, don’t settle for the second option on the things that matter most. Regardless of whether it’s the venue, the food, the dress, the band, or yes, even the photographer, make sure you get what you want, and follow up with that service until the moment you start walking down the aisle.

Always do your research, always meet with the vendor to make sure what you’re paying for is what you want; otherwise, you’ll be left with a slightly bitter taste in your mouth, no matter how much in love you are the day that you say “I do.”

wedding photos

Often, people on their way to the altar fall victim to one of three myths.

Myth 1: Everything is going to work out perfectly because this is our “special day.”

Fact: Things can go wrong, even in the smoothest of business deals. Make sure your all of your vendors know up front exactly what you expect from them. Put the directions in writing, and keep a copy for yourself. If something does go wrong, or you’re not satisfied, you have a paper trail with which to try and get a refund, despite it being little consolation if it happens to be your wedding photos you are not happy with.

Myth 2: Once hired, the vendor will do everything in his/her power to make your wedding perfect.

Fact: There are many great wedding vendors out there who will go above and beyond to deliver what they promise but unfortunately it is a fact of life that there are some who won’t. Maybe your personal opinion of what constitutes quality or a value-for-money service just doesn’t match theirs. Whatever the case, don’t just sign a contract and expect them to live up to your expectations eight months later at the wedding hall. Check their reviews, meet in person where possible and don’t be shy in asking if you can book a ‘test’ run, so to speak. This may incur a little extra cost but at least this way you can check the end result before making any kind of payment. When it comes down to your photographer, it is especially important to feel comfortable and relaxed with them.

Myth 3: A signed contract will ensure quality of service.

Fact: While it is true that you should never accept word of mouth agreements and ensure that you get something in writing, a signed contract doesn’t not always guarantee that you will get what you expect. Always remember to read the small print clauses such as the disclaimer and deposit agreement so you know what you are agreeing to ahead of time. Whoever the vendor and whatever service they are providing, follow up with them and don’t hesitate to ask for status updates and progress reports on how things are coming together. If your vendor can’t offer what you have agreed, signed and paid for, don’t make the same mistake we did of simply settling for their second best offer. This is after all your special day!
