Posted by SassyBrideTNGirlie, I think when you find your dress, you know. No matter if it's 6 months before the wedding or sixteen months before the wedding!! Do whatever feels right for you!!
(Although let's face it, I think you've already picked out that FREAKING GORGEOUS Sophia Tolli gown.)
Everyone told me about a year out – some dresss are ready sooner, some can take 6-9 months. I couldn't wait any longer and went a little more than a year out. I found the perfect dress and it came in 3 months early.
May as well start looking. Worst case, you find one you love.
I think your plan sounds good. A year before gives you plenty of time just in case you do need to wait 6-9 months.
I agree… i ordered mine exactly 6 months before but shopped for about 3-4 months all over the country… take your time since you have it and really find the one you love that makes you feel amazing ! That is what is important!
On average a gown takes 4 to 8 months to come in. Depending on the maker etc. I started at about the year in mark and it has been a whirlwind. I purchased one gown, cheated and purchased another lol. I agree with take your time and SHOP. I tried on over 100 dresses and it was not by choice. It took me over 3 months of shopping to find my dress (my 2nd dress that is) and wouldn't ya know it..I fell in love with a sample gown!!

I would personally be looking for *the* dress now so that you have no restrictions on the possibilities. This would even allow you decide to have one custom made if you can't find exactly what you're looking for. My dress is a Maggie Sottero and it took 3.5 months to get it in… and now I have to allow time for fittings. Why make everything rushed? Take care of things you can now… and that will help from everything coming out of the budget at the same time too.
