Mason jars are the most versatile country wedding accessory, as they can be used for fancy drinks, floral arrangements, they can hold candles, or be used as gift containers. We were thrilled with our engagement photos but wary when the photographer informed us that he was unavailable for our actual wedding date and would send his brother and partner instead.

We weighed our options and ultimately accepted the substitute, only to regret it when the pictures came back a couple of months later. Every complaint we could have had was represented in the photos we received. The photos had odd angles, cut off bodies and there were even moments that had been completely missed. We complained of course, but what recourse did we have? When it comes to wedding days, there are no do-overs.

The lesson learned here has to be: when it comes to your wedding, don’t settle for the second option on the things that matter most. Regardless of whether it’s the venue, the food, the dress, the band, or yes, even the photographer, make sure you get what you want, and follow up with that service until the moment you start walking down the aisle.

Always do your research, always meet with the vendor to make sure what you’re paying for is what you want; otherwise, you’ll be left with a slightly bitter taste in your mouth, no matter how much in love you are the day that you say “I do.”

Often, people on their way to the altar fall victim to one of three myths.

Myth 1: Everything is going to work out perfectly because this is our “special day.”

Fact: Things can go wrong, even in the smoothest of business deals. Make sure your all of your vendors know up front exactly what you expect from them. Put the directions in writing, and keep a copy for yourself. If something does go wrong, or you’re not satisfied, you have a paper trail with which to try and get a refund, despite it being little consolation if it happens to be your wedding photos you are not happy with.

Myth 2: Once hired, the vendor will do everything in his/her power to make your wedding perfect.

Fact: There are many great wedding vendors out there who will go above and beyond to deliver what they promise but unfortunately it is a fact of life that there are some who won’t. Maybe your personal opinion of what constitutes quality or a value-for-money service just doesn’t match theirs. Whatever the case, don’t just sign a contract and expect them to live up to your expectations eight months later at the wedding hall. Check their reviews, meet in person where possible and don’t be shy in asking if you can book a ‘test’ run, so to speak. This may incur a little extra cost but at least this way you can check the end result before making any kind of payment. When it comes down to your photographer, it is especially important to feel comfortable and relaxed with them.

Myth 3: A signed contract will ensure quality of service.

Fact: While it is true that you should never accept word of mouth agreements and ensure that you get something in writing, a signed contract doesn’t not always guarantee that you will get what you expect. Always remember to read the small print clauses such as the disclaimer and deposit agreement so you know what you are agreeing to ahead of time. Whoever the vendor and whatever service they are providing, follow up with them and don’t hesitate to ask for status updates and progress reports on how things are coming together. If your vendor can’t offer what you have agreed, signed and paid for, don’t make the same mistake we did of simply settling for their second best offer. This is after all your special day!

Catering Options

Do you and your husband-to-be have a favorite restaurant that you want to share with all of your friends and family? If so, why not ask if they cater for weddings.  Just because your venue may be able to provide food for you doesn’t mean you can’t have an outside vendor caterer for your wedding if this is what you would prefer. If you’re not into the whole formal sit down dinner bit, a catered buffet is the perfect solution.

Does your venue have a restaurant?

If you choose to have your reception at a venue that has a restaurant, see what they can provide in-house. Pick a day to go in with your fiancé to sample the menu and have a chat with the chef.  They can talk to you about what has worked in the past and what they can do to accommodate you. Remember to ask about package deals that include beverage options as venue wedding packages can often work out cheaper than outside caterers. Your options however, may be dictated by the type of food that you want, so it is important to clarify the ideas  you and your partner have for your wedding menu before you start listing your options.

What will you be having to drink? 

If you are a wine drinker and want to take your wedding menu experience up a notch, you may want to thinking about pairing your drinks with the food you are serving rather than just offering just one red wine and one white wine option.  Talk to whoever is providing you with your food about possible pairings or signature cocktails that they think will enhance your guests’ overall experience.  If you are planning on having an open bar at your wedding, it’s always a good idea to close the open bar while dinner is being served to help cut costs.  Don’t forget to offer a beer and soft drink option for non wine drinkers during the meal.

Cost

If you’re a bride on a budget, you will need to keep costs in mind while deciding what your guests will be eating and drinking. The more formal the meal, typically the more expensive it will be, unless you have some kind of connection with a particular chef, restaurant, or caterer in town who can give you a brilliant deal.  Buffets are typically much cheaper than a sit down 3 course meal, with a filet mignon entree.  If you’re set on a sit down formal dinner but want to save a few bucks, limit the entree choices to less expensive options such as chicken or vegetarian.

Dessert

Not everyone is opting for the traditional wedding cake these days. Smaller sweets are definitely an option that many brides are using including a selection of different mini deserts or a fancy desert table.  Think cupcakes, cake pops, mini cakes and an array of tempting retro-styled candies. Not only will you be a huge hit with the little kids at your wedding but the big kids too. You can even provide some cellophane bags so guests can take some candy home with them if they aren’t keen on munching away through the night.

With a classic beaded sweetheart décolletage, large flower details at the hip and an A-line skirt, Lauren’s choice of dress was wonderfully proportionate to her slender figure. The figure hugging design of the waist and the large ruffles in the skirt adding a little volume gave her a stunning silhouette. Particularly well suited for a church wedding, the long veil and train was an elegant touch.

Arm in arm with both her father and stepfather, Lauren’s walk down was truly touching to witness.

Once vows were repeated, rings given and all nuptial exchanges sealed with a passionate kiss, the couple and their guests moved on to the Hilton for a glass of champagne, a sit-down meal and an evening of live music.

Following some emotional speeches, Lauren and Jon glowingly led the dancing with a romantic first dance song ‘Lucky’ by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat.

With the sun shining and the beautiful autumn leaves the perfect backdrop, the couple thoroughly enjoyed the best of both their indoor and outdoor photo opportunities.
