The Perfect Wedding Cake, No Matter the Budget

As the centerpiece of the typical wedding reception, the wedding cake is something that most couples are willing to spend a generous amount of money on. However, how much is too much? Today, people are bringing their budgets for these edible masterpieces to new heights. The dynamic duo of Mimi So Jewellers and cake designer La Patisserie Artistique created a cake that was worth $20 million dollars, sporting an array of priceless diamonds and tasteful ruffles. The catch? You have to get past the team of security guards before you can even get a glimpse of this wonder.

If diamond encrusted cakes are not particularly your style, there are plenty of companies that can produce gorgeous cakes within a tighter budget. Here are some secrets on how to spend less on your wedding cake:

  1. Want a cake with several layers? Just ask the baker to decorate a fake tier (typically a box) for one or more of the layers. It saves money and the fake tier will look identical to the rest of the cake, without spending money on an extra layer of cake.
  2. Visit some local catering schools. Wedding cakes would be a perfect- and inexpensive- project for the students.
  3. Opt for an alternative to a cake. Have the baker make a "tower of cupcakes" to resemble the shape of a wedding cake. You can even get creative and have the cupcakes decorated to your liking. So, no matter the amount of money you would like to spend on your cake, there is definitely someone out there that can make your wedding cake dreams come true!
